PMP certification-A secrete for project success

PMP (Project Management) are strong by most leading organizations recognized today. Anyone with a PMP certification awarded to the position of project manager to keep this certificate is a recognition of professionalism in project management. PMP certification is for training, experience and professional knowledge to determine. For the project manager is responsible for initiating, planning, controlling, execution and completion of the project.

The PMP certification is offered by the PMI (Project Management Institute) for those professionals interested in becoming a certified project manager. Now there is a high demand for the certified managers. Most of the good companies require a project manager to be PMP-certified in order to be hired for a project. Even the government contracts dealing with project managers won’t accept a proposal from somebody who is not PMP certified. The project managers who are PMP certified draw 40% more salary than one who doesn’t have the certification.

The PMP certification program depends on work experience in project management. The more experience one has the more it will be easy to have the certification. Many institutes are there which help to expertise on these courses. If you want to do certification or want to take the online line test the best place is a REP (Resister Education Provider) institute. You can take benefit of this training to become a strong competitor in market and to improve your skills.

PMP® Exam Process:

The aspirants must have a minimum experience of 3 years in project management in his total 6 years of experience. PMI measures Project Management Experience in units of PDU. PDU means Professional Development Unit. So, if you attend a Project Management Class of 1 hour by an expert, its equivalent to say 1 PDU. If you write a White Paper on Project Management related topic, it may be equivalent to 5 PDU. PMI has detailed guideline on what kind of project management activity amounts to how many PDUs. Every three years, one must haveacquired 60 PDUs to retain their PMP certificate. So first time, when you write the exam, you become PMP for 3 years.

PMP Exam is a four hour exam consisting of 200 questions. Out of this 200, 25 questions are not scored. But you should answer all 200 questions, with same seriousness because you won’t know which these 25 questions are. PMI includes these questions to see how many test takers are getting them right. Based on this, they might decide to include these questions in future Exam. It’s like a survey conducted by PMI.

Now, you must be guessing that PMP exam is not that easy. You are right! Taking PMP exam does require certain seriousness in preparation. But once you get the certification it’s a great advantage in career of a project manager.

In order to have success with project management, there are several things you will have to focus on. Unfortunately, it does not come easy for everyone. You have to work at it to make sure you properly handle everything that needs to be taken care of. Here are seven tips to having success with project management.

1. The three dimensions

When seeking out to have success as the project manager, there are three dimensions you will want to focus on. The first of the three is time, which you must take seriously. It is up to you to make sure the project is completed in a timely manner. The second dimension is budget because as you know, nothing comes for free. Make sure you look at everything closely and stay within the budget. Lastly, quality determines how much of a success the project had.

2. Planning

In order to make sure that you can accomplish all three dimensions, it is essential you plan extensively. The plan could very well change over time, but it is vital you plan everything out before starting anything. Planning is one of the single most important responsibilities of the project manager. You want to have a detailed, systematic, and team-oriented plan that will lead to a successful project.

3. Urgency

As the team manager, it is up to you to show a sense of urgency to the rest of the team. Nothing will get completed unless you are on top of the ball. Projects have certain time limits, money limits and other issues to be cautious of. Because of this, it is essential that you stay on everyone involved to make sure the project moves in the right track. Regular status checks, meetings and reminders are essential.

4. Get it right the first time

It is understandable to make mistakes from time to time, especially when you are on a time constraint. But it is vital you do everything you can to complete the project efficiently the first time. You do not want to say you wish you could have done it better. Make sure you have enough time to complete the project correctly without having to change anything after.

5. Hire the best

Just as with any profession, it is up to you to hire the best people to get the job done efficiently. Take the time to look at all of your options so you have the best to complete the project. You want to acquire the most skilled, most experienced, and best qualified people for the job. In addition to hiring the people that are most qualified, you will also have to handle the unpleasant task of letting some people go. There are going to be times when people are not working up to par, and it is up to you to put people in their place.

6. Set priorities

It is not uncommon in project management to have to take on several different responsibilities and teams at once. At times, it can become frustrating trying to handle several projects all at once. Therefore, it is up to you to set your priorities straight and figure out what responsibilities and projects mean the most. You want to look at which projects have the most impact and which can be put on the side-burner momentarily.

When attempting to have success with project management, there are several things you will have to do. It is up to you to make sure the most qualified people are working, they are working with urgency, and you are prepared to lead them to a successful project. Take the tips listed in this article into consideration so you can have success as a project manager.

Writing and reading is my passion and I love to spend my time in writing on various subjects. As per my perception, this is one of the few professions, where you get to know about so many things while you read and write. It is one profession that gives you right to express your creativity and belief through the power of words. Perhaps, I know the importance of words. Words can influence your thought process. Words can give you a reason to think and act. The power of words has created a revolution in past and it has the ability to do so in future.
Well, myself as Vidyut Bharti knows the power of words and it is because of this reason, I persuaded my career in writing. After working on different areas and types of writing like: web-content, sales promotional content, creative advertisements and education I have learned a lot about writing. Being a mass communication graduate, I write news and features on commission as well as other materials and have branched out in the last decade or so into blog and website creation.

Let’s face the facts: managing the team is the most difficult function. To get and stay on the same page the team needs proper motivation. Managing and motivating is a complex skill on its own and it even more difficult when everyone works in dispersed locations. Here are some tips1. Analyze your own motivation for project management. List the positives in all situations. For more details go to: www.page-brand-generator.com as a motivated project manager your team will have confidence in you and will follow willingly.2. Make your team stakeholders. Describe to all how their individual tasks fit into the project. Explain why, any odd circumstances and restrictions surrounding the project.3, Invite good suggestions from team members and when possible act quickly to show recognition. Act to fast implement the suggestion.4. People usually work better virtually when the boss is not breathing down their neck. So use project management software to manage task deadlines but do it in a way that makes it a goal that the team can take pride in achieving.5. Divide projects into clear milestones; good project managers motivate by defining attainable milestones within the project. Celebrate milestones completed on time.6. Use words like WE instead of I. Don’t brag about success7. When problems arise take it to your team; when they understand the circumstances it is easier to motivate them to conquer the problem. Do not blame anyone in a team environment; it creates an environment of distrust.8. Provide team feedback in a positive manner; tell them what was right, show them the shortcomings and how it can be done better. Ask for personal feedback on a positive manner.9. Show your support for the team. When the going gets tough give them confidence and let them know you are there if they get stuck.10. Have regular web conferences, listen to your team member’s talk and watch your team’s body language. Let your team think “out side of the box” and encourage their participation for the good of the project.11. Put the right resources together for the project. Not every team member can do every task. For can visit to: www.text2speech-converter.com as project manager you pick the right person for task, provide the right tools and resource to meet his task goal.12. Ask yourself, “Which people work better with which people?” Grouping these resources into e-Teams for your project will lead to hire productivity and project satisfaction.13. Channel issue reporting, use your project management software to notify virtual team members of problems. Miscommunications can lead to big problems. Resolve “situations” before they can damage the team (and personal) morale.14. Give reasonable time lines for the task and then let the task responsible person execute. Insist that they use the project management software to enter their hours, notify the project manager of status changes. A good online project management software interface will help each team member keep current.15. Reward appropriately when working with dispersed project team members. Not everyone needs the same benefits and kudos from a project. But remember to tell them that they did good work if you want to work with them again.

You may have read in Part 1 of this 2-part article, that I recently managed a highly technical SAP project that had so many problems, every morning when the alarm clock rang I’d pull the covers up over my head for fear of heading into work. But, thanks to a few of my project management strategies, and all the planets aligning in the exact right place at the exact right time, the project launched on time, on budget, and with the fewest number of defects than any other similar project in the company.
So in the true spirit of being a good project manager, I’m sharing five more project management success strategies that worked well for me and my team.
1. Lead your team. Every project hits a rough patch, or two, or nineteen. Show strength. Role model grace under pressure. What have you done for your team lately? What motivates each of your teammates? Have you asked them? You’ll find that some are motivated by the challenge, some by the visibility, recognition, showcasing their expertise, learning something new, etc. Find what motivates each team member and then give it to them. With a motivated and inspired team, your project will run so much more smoothly.
2. Prioritize everything. In today’s resource-, cost-, and time-constrained business world, you don’t have the luxury of NOT prioritizing. Managing a high profile project is like herding snakes. There are countless other initiatives that your project is dependent on, and numerous customer and business stakeholders wanting to know the status, risks, timeline, and resources that you’ll need for next quarter. Just breathe. Then prioritize. You can only do so much with what you have. If someone is asking, or demanding, the stars, then meet with him one-on-one and listen to his suggestion. Discuss your timeline, goals, and priorities, and then align expectations. Much of project management is about setting priorities, and then aligning everyone else to those priorities.
3. Role model PM discipline. You can’t be a great leader until you role model PM discipline. Get your project management professional (PMP) certification. It works. Your life and the lives of your team members will be easier. You’ll also have so much more energy since you won’t be running away from key stakeholders, or challenging processes, and asking Why(?) all the time. You’ll immediately know what the right thing is to do, and you’ll know to just do it.
4. Don’t hide problems. I’m tired of people saying my projects don’t have any problems, only opportunities. Where is it written that having a problem is shameful? I have a friend who’s a Microsoft general manager and whenever Bill Gates visits him, his first question is always, Hey Mike! So, what’s your biggest problem? What a relief that must be to actually take off his big coat of armor and just be able to talk about his biggest problem and then brainstorm solutions.
It’s comforting to realize that other project managers have similar issues. Once the feeling, I’m-in-this-all-by-myself dissolves, then the feeling comes in, How can we work together to manage this? There should be no shame or judgment, only support and encouragement. So be proud of your problems. Talk about them openly. Then find the best possible solution and move forward.
5. Celebrate successes, give compliments and lavish recognition. We can’t leave it up to our senior managers to improve morale and make our projects fun. We need to do that ourselves. We all want the same thing: to have meaningful and challenging work and to feel valued and appreciated. Find a way to give that to yourself and your team members.
If you continuously gloss over the 90 percent of the project that’s going right, and focus only on the 10 percent that’s not, then shift your thinking. Take moments to appreciate your team. Don’t put a “but” at the end of your compliments – for example, Nice job on that data conversion, John, but when are you going to fix that defect? That’s not a compliment. Say often, Good job, and Well done!
Gift your compliments in person, as well as in e-mails and copy the team member’s manager. Host a team recognition dinner after the project is complete. Write personalized thank you notes. Nominate the team for a company recognition award. Send extended team members a thank you token such as a small gift certificate. And most of all, don’t be stingy with compliments. They cost nothing. Let’s make our projects fun again. Appreciate your team, and they will appreciate you.
