In order to have success with project management, there are several things you will have to focus on. Unfortunately, it does not come easy for everyone. You have to work at it to make sure you properly handle everything that needs to be taken care of. Here are seven tips to having success with project management.

1. The three dimensions

When seeking out to have success as the project manager, there are three dimensions you will want to focus on. The first of the three is time, which you must take seriously. It is up to you to make sure the project is completed in a timely manner. The second dimension is budget because as you know, nothing comes for free. Make sure you look at everything closely and stay within the budget. Lastly, quality determines how much of a success the project had.

2. Planning

In order to make sure that you can accomplish all three dimensions, it is essential you plan extensively. The plan could very well change over time, but it is vital you plan everything out before starting anything. Planning is one of the single most important responsibilities of the project manager. You want to have a detailed, systematic, and team-oriented plan that will lead to a successful project.

3. Urgency

As the team manager, it is up to you to show a sense of urgency to the rest of the team. Nothing will get completed unless you are on top of the ball. Projects have certain time limits, money limits and other issues to be cautious of. Because of this, it is essential that you stay on everyone involved to make sure the project moves in the right track. Regular status checks, meetings and reminders are essential.

4. Get it right the first time

It is understandable to make mistakes from time to time, especially when you are on a time constraint. But it is vital you do everything you can to complete the project efficiently the first time. You do not want to say you wish you could have done it better. Make sure you have enough time to complete the project correctly without having to change anything after.

5. Hire the best

Just as with any profession, it is up to you to hire the best people to get the job done efficiently. Take the time to look at all of your options so you have the best to complete the project. You want to acquire the most skilled, most experienced, and best qualified people for the job. In addition to hiring the people that are most qualified, you will also have to handle the unpleasant task of letting some people go. There are going to be times when people are not working up to par, and it is up to you to put people in their place.

6. Set priorities

It is not uncommon in project management to have to take on several different responsibilities and teams at once. At times, it can become frustrating trying to handle several projects all at once. Therefore, it is up to you to set your priorities straight and figure out what responsibilities and projects mean the most. You want to look at which projects have the most impact and which can be put on the side-burner momentarily.

When attempting to have success with project management, there are several things you will have to do. It is up to you to make sure the most qualified people are working, they are working with urgency, and you are prepared to lead them to a successful project. Take the tips listed in this article into consideration so you can have success as a project manager.

Is project management an art or a science? How do I deal with problem employees? How can I improve employee morale and boost productivity? What skills can I develop that will ensure that my projects will run smoothly and to a successful finish. This essay tries to answer these questions, drawing from lessons I have learnt on the job. While the examples I provide are from a software company perspective, most of the article applies to any kind of domain. Being a Project Manager, I have found, calls upon 5 different sets of skills:

Do you consider yourself an organized person who can generate and keep track of multiple documents? If so, you already have one of the most important skills needed as a Project Manager. On the job, I was called upon to keep track of requirements and design documents, contracts, schedules, personnel records, project reports, communication (email) records, hiring history, meetings and status reports. Luckily for me, I have always been a meticulous record-keeper (since I don’t trust my memory ), and this saved me from being overwhelmed.

This does not refer to just giving presentations, but to various forms of written and oral communication. A Project Manager is expected to produce high-quality project planning and design documents, and send out meeting agendas, updates, status reports and courteous and effective email. A good manager, I observed from my peers, is able to get his/her ideas across clearly and in a non-confrontational manner, without seeming to impose views on subordinates. This is a skill I am still learning. Good negotiation skills also fall into this category.

A good manager has the knack of seeing the big picture for any problem, while others may miss the forest for the trees. I was frequently called upon to analyze a problem, research and compile a list of alternative solutions, determine the best course of action and get it implemented by my team. The trick is to never lose sight of the big picture – the overall problem we are trying to solve.

It is not easy. It is difficult to get your team going with your idea, without making them feel that the idea is to push on them. The team hopes that the project manager to provide direction and vision. To do this, I had to work tirelessly to improve my knowledge – the extent of knowledge is very important, but the depth is also important – a superficial knowledge of fools everyone. A manager must earn the respect of his team and the best way is to lead by example.

This is an often-neglected area, forgotten in all the excitement of project deadlines. But the effort spent motivating a team to perform to the best of its ability is worth its weight in gold. Four easy points to remember are: reward achievements, provide feedback, recognize strengths and provide challenges.

Instead of talking in generalities, let us follow the lifecycle of a project step by step, and see how these skills come into play. A Project Manager is involved in all of the following 5 phases of a project.

Several Fortune 1000 companies demand that their employees in project management activities should be PMPs.The Project Management role has evolved into a well defined discipline that encompasses all the different activities and skill-sets required for successful implementation of a project.

Free Tips for the Project Management exam- Before the Examination A PMP exam prep course is the best way to begin. Check for institutes that offer PMP Boot Camps which are classroom sessions spread over 3-5 days that involve extensive and comprehensive training sessions. The primary benefit of these sessions is that one can interact with the experienced faculty and also other Project Managers (PM) who are taking up the exam. This interaction ensures that one gets a firsthand experience on how to approach situations that one comes across as a PM and the underlying principle that govern them. Periodic Evaluation-A large number of free tests are available online that one can use to assess one’s preparation for the examination. The exam simulation software that most websites offer is a better option though they can be expensive. These tests let you pick up the necessary time-management skills and the detailed reports allows one to review one’s performance and learn the correct answers for questions one missed.

During the Examination Type of Questions: The PMP Certification Exam consists of 200 Multiple Choice Questions, which must be answered within 4 hours. These questions are randomly generated from a question database which has several hundred questions. There is No Negative Marking. All Questions are Multiple Select Questions i.e. the examinee must choose one from the available four alternatives. The examinee does not need to type even a single word in the question paper. Out of 200 questions answered, 25 questions are dummy questions which will not be used for scoring. Please note that dummy questions are selected randomly by the computer and are not known by the candidate when taking the exam – so effectively candidates have to answer all the 200 questions to the best of their ability. Since 25 out of 200 questions are not used for scoring, so effectively, 175 questions are used for scoring for the exam. To pass the PMP Exam, the candidate must answer 106 out of 175 questions correctly (i.e. pass percentage is 60.6%). Elimination of options while answering remains the golden rule for any multiple choice examination. So is the case with this examination. Judicious elimination of the options is necessary here. Going against PMI principles is never a good option. Always choose options that are ethical even though they may seem to be the tougher choices to make during the examination. Each question has only one correct answer. Read all the options before selecting any one. Choices that are characterized by words such as always, never, must, or completely; are often incorrect. Remember, when in doubt, go by the PMI PMBOK. Do not apply only practical project management knowledge or else you will fail the PMP exam. Read the questions correctly and interpret them properly. Have good, specific reasons for changing answers to questions that you have already answered. Avoid adding extra functionality in the answers without benefits or gold plating (which is giving the customer more than what was required).Customer extras can include extra functionality, higher-quality components, extra scope of work or better performance. Get plenty of rest the night before taking the examination. The examination is both rigorous and challenging.

To all the PMP aspirants I wish you all –Good Luck!
